The population of Johns Island is
growing because of its proximity to Charleston. The 2000
census reported a total of 11,477. The other major
population center is the town of Seabrook Island, which
is not on a separate island, but on a peninsula at the
extreme south of Johns Island. The island has a land
area of 216.83 km˛ (83.72 sq mi). Johns Island is also
known as the second largest island on the east coast of
