The town was named after Bat Cave Mountain, which in turn was named for a cave at the foot of the mountain which is inhabited by a multitude of bats. The town is located on the Broad River at 35.451N and -82.287W with an elevation of approximately 1,460 feet.

Bat Cave is roughly a forty-minute drive east of Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains by way of state highways that wind through the mountains.
